2 Year Old Horsfield Tortoise Problems

Hi, I have a 2 year old male Horsfield tortoise and for the past couple of months he has been desperately trying to escape his enclosure. He seems to eat very sparingly too. Is he trying to hibernate? He escaped 5 days ago and we eventually found him beneath a chest of drawers. I've also noticed that the scales at the very edges of his shell seem to have become thin and clear. What's going on? I just want him to be healthy and happy :(
