Baby Turtle eyes closed

I just wanted make sure that my baby painted turtle is okay? When I put her in the tank she keeps her eyes closed and has not ate for two days. When I pick her up she opens her eyes, should I be worried? Also, she is about the size of a nickel.

Please take this animal to a reptile vet because it could be quite ill.

Keep it slow and steady.

my turtle is not in the water much and closes its eyes even when i pick it up. it is a baby. it only goes in the water to eat. but thats not my main concern. its the eyes, the eyes are not puffy but the eyes are only open in the water. And i have two baby turtles and my other one is completely fine. im really worried. we have a reptile vet near us but i don't know if they will take babies. i would never give my turtle away so do you have any advise to help it? should i be worried?

Help a baby turtle
by: Shelly

It is best to put a wild turtle back into the natural habitat. In this case, I would put it near water in the swamp area. This is where it was designed to live.

Keep it slow and steady.

I have just found a baby turtle in my chair as I think the dog or cat brought it in from the Swamp so I cleaned out a small tank and added water and a small rock and gave it some food, But it is not very active and his/her eyes are closed.... It looks like its a newly hatched baby as how small it is... Why is the eyes closed and not moving a lot

Turtle with closed eyes
by: Shelly

Michele,

You have a sick pet that needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Please do not wait. If you can't do this yourself, please take your animal to a turtle rescue center where someone will take proper care of it.

Keep it slow and steady.

Baby Turtl eyes closed

The fact that she can open them is a good sign, not eating is a concern... Now if she does not get Vitamin A, her eyes will be affected and will close them, and also if not eating, she will not get the calcium she needs to keep a hard shell and strong bones....The things you need to check are the lighting and water, and food... Water should be warmer as she is a baby, upper 70's, low 80's... UVA light should be high 80's, low 90's, that is during the night as well, I switch to a red bulb at night, and it sits over the basking area.... UVB bulb need to be on during day for 12 hours at a time. I like the 10.0 UVB bulb.. I like a good pump to keep water very clean, along with frequent water changes... added calcium with a cuddle bone.. I use Wardley calcium fortied pellets, and hand feed a few i the morning and a few in the evening.. at 5 months I was able to add romaine lettuce to the diet...she needs to open her eyes in order to eat, try the hand feeding in the water, and then you will know what the turtle gets every day...she has to eat now.. I hope I have been of some help..it she continues being so small, you might have to see a vet to get some liquid vitamins into her asap...sincerely, Susan...
