bit of shell fell off and now peeling

I have a 7 year old leopard tortoise. Recently his shell on the underneath near his left leg (our right looking at him) started to peel, there was no discolouration or bleeding. now its fallen off and the new shell is hard smooth and yellow (shell yellow though no black markings on it) only difference is there is no texture like the rest of his shell.

Now it looks like the other side is doing it!! whats up with him?

It sounds like his shell is shedding. Actually, it's the sections of shell or the scutes that shed. As long as it is replaced by new shell, you should be fine. But if you are worried, do see a vet. It never hurts to have a check up, well other than in the pocket book, but that's part of having a pet.
