black patches on the shell..

i own a short neck turtle origianting in the northern territory of australia, and in the past few days he had developed dark patches on some of the plates on his shell. there are two plates in the middle, and on on the edge. he's still a baby, very young. only about the size of a yo-yo. what is causing the change in his coloring? is he sick? thanks.
