do hermanns tortoises need to hibernate?

when i first got my hermanns tortoise 4 years ago the pet shop i got him from said i shouldent hibernate him as he is still young. about 2 years ago that pet shop was demolished, so i started going to a new one.

recently i asked about hibernating, and they said that i shouldent bother as hermanns tortoises dont need it at all. problem is that the new pet shop isnt really what youd call 'professional' and the old one never mentioned it.
do i have to do it? thanks :)
