Hydration;humidity
by: Anonymous

I've been told that it is best for indoor dessert tortoises to not have 24/7 access to water. Instead soak the tortoise 2 times a week, about every 3 days, for 15-30 minutes, the water should be as deep as to the bottom of the shell, this will allow it to gorge drink and eliminate at the same time as most dessert tortoise do. The benefits of watering like this is many

1. Poop water doesn't have a chance to get infested
2. Mimics the tortoises natural hydration process
3.It prevents water spillage in the enclosure
4. A dish of water will cause the habit enclosure's hydrate causing the humidity to increase, sometimes by as much as 20%

tortoise drinking

Water is what it drinks to be healthy. Like any other animal, it can probably drink any liquid, some of those liquids will kill it just like they could kill any person or animal.

Horses and tortoises
by: Shelly

I've heard that you an lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

I can't vouch for horses, but I know this is true for tortoises.

If you leave water for a tortoise, it will drink if it needs a drink. More likely, the tortoise will just soak in the water.

Make sure it's just up to the spot where the bottom of top shell ends. Room temperature is great.

Keep the water clean and available. Your tortoise will hydrate when needed.

This will also help with elimination.

Keep it slow and steady.
