Egyptian Tortoise Temperament

Hi!!!

I've been debating on buying a Russian Tortoise or a Egyptian Tortoise. I've been also thinking about breeding the Egyptian Tortoise because their on the endangered species list.

On the internet, I have found vast amounts of information about the Russian Tortoise. Mostly every website writes that the Russian Tortoise is nice and friendly to humans.

I have been trying to find information about the temperament or social behavior of the Egyptian Tortoise. I read that Egyptian Tortoises are shy. I was wondering if you had any information about the temperament of the Egyptian Tortoise? Would an Egyptian Tortoise sit in my lap? Or be kinda and nice to me?

Would a Russian Tortoise or a Egyptian Tortoise have a better temperament around their owners?

Thank you so much!!
Rachel

Ive never owned a Egyptian Tortoise, but I do have 3 Russian Tortoises and they are very friendly and personable. The females seem more personable and climb into my lap or cuddle next to me more them my male. But just the same I love them all. Good Luck, but I would suggest in buying a Tortoise, I would think of it as a pet, not an investment for breeding. Start at maybe adopting one from a Tortoise Society in your area, and adopt one that needs a new home.

Egyptian Tortoise

I have many Tortoise's 3 of them are Russian and have great personalities. Yes they eat out of my hand, yes one of them follows me around, yes they let me pet them and one of them even crawls up on my lap and falls asleep. But I spend a lot of time with my Tortoise's and have made them very tame and very comfortable. My most personable Tortoise is my Greek Tortoise Delila. She is very calm and loves attention, she seems to really like human touch, eats from my hands, is always following me and will fall asleep on my shoulder. Your Tortoise will depend on how much time you have to let them get used to you and trust you. I personally think they are very intelligent and great pets, but they will never be as personable as a cat or dog. But they have a good chance of being a pet for life if you take great care of them. Good Luck and pls don't choose a Tortoise only for their breeding potential, for income or otherwise. Choose them for your knowledge of them and your ability to care for them. They can get very expensive if they get sick..and they can also out live you!

The Egyptian tortoise is shy while the Russian tortoise is more likely to follow you around and even play in some ways. Neither will be a pet like a dog or cat in the way they relate to you. No tortoise will.

If you decide to get an Egyptian tortoise, be sure you check local regulations. Not all states will allow you to keep them or may have special requirements. And don't feed an Egyptian ANY fruit!

Keep it slow and steady.

lap tortoise

Not sure about Egyptian tortoise temperament, but no tortoise is going to be a lap pet. When people say their tortoises are freindly, they mean the tortoise might follow them around or allow their heads to be rubbed. They don't mean the tortoise cuddles with them.
