Franklin was a crazy tortoise

We have had a California Desert Tortoise for over 10 years. Never had a problem with him. He loved to climb things, into the house, over my daughters go-kart. He would set himself up on the seat of the go-kart. He would come to us when we called to him. Silly crazy Franklin.

I seen him 2 days earlier and feed him cantalope. My son feed him the next day and the next day - we came home to find him completely bloated and his shell was cracked from the pressure of the bloating. His eyes were wide open and so was his mouth. Fluid was coming from his mouth. He seemed normal - but a little slow since coming out of hybernation this year. We believe he was about 35-40 years old. Trying to figure out what happened to him. Can a tortoise bloat that quickly from death? Can a spider have bitten him? Constipation maybe? We are so confused - we thought he would outlive us. What is your thoughts on this?
