Count to find tortoise age

Unless you know when a turtle is born, it's nearly impossible to tell its age. While you can count rings on the turtle's belly, that method is often a better representation of when the turtle had food and when it didn't. This method can give you a reasonable guess:
* Pick a scute - The scutes are the scales that cover the turtle's shell.
* Count the rings. In theory, wider rings represent a period of good eating, typically the warm season. A narrower ring represents a period of scarcity, often in the winter. Therefore, if you count the rings and divide by 2, you have a general estimate of the turtle's age.

That's it! It's not exact, but a general idea.

Indian Star Tortoise

At maturity, your Indian star tortoise will be about 6 to 15 inches long. As you can see there is lot of room for variation, so I can't say how old yours is.

It is most likely to live (if healthy) for 30 to 35 years, although some have made it to 80.
