how to tell if your hermanns tortoise is happy

we got a hermanns tortoise the other day and doseont seem to be settling in well. my sisters are always fighting and man handling him when they want to play with him so how do i tell if hes happy and what does it mean when his throat vibrates

First of all, the rule should be NO handling the tortoise unless it is to keep him clean and healthy. Tortoises are not cats or dogs and don't like to be touched. Touching stresses them out.

A happy tortoise will be active for part of the day--after he's had a chance to warm up under his lamp if he's inside, or has been basking in the sun outside. He will also eat well.

I'm sorry, I don't know about the throat thing. If you can see into his mouth be sure it's a healthy pink. If there is any discharge from his nose or bubbly breathing, get him to a vet right away.
