leg abscess

by Carol
(New Jersey)

It appears that my box turtle has developed a lesion in front of her right rear leg. It is quite deep and filled with soil. I had not noticed this because I do not handle her often as I try to let her live quietly. She has not shown any adverse signs of ill health. Her appetite is normal, she has been mobile, her bowels are normal, the only change I have noted is she is not climbing quite as much. I have tried to clean it out but I am alarmed at the depth of the wound. Should I find a vet that specializes in reptiles?

Seeingn a vet
by: Shelly

You are a careful pet owner. That's a good thing.

Yes, I think you should see a vet. Even a regular vet will be able to clean the wound better than you can. You will also have a relationship with the vet if it turns out that there is a deeper problem than just a cleaning.

Please post back to let us know what happens.

Keep it slow and steady.
