my baby acquatic turtles always under a rock

i put a large rock in my tank so that my turtle can come up outside the water freeley and i ALWAYS find an empty tank thinking it escaped and then come to find out the turtle is under the rock. why is this happenig?

Yes, some turtles are very shy, like map turtles. I was wondering whether you had a basking light, UVA over the rock or some other spot where he can come out to dry off and warm up, as turtles need this, also have the UVB near the basking area as well.
This of course will encourage him to eat...I hope this helps....sincerely, Susan.
