Hi,

I hav a Male Indian Star Tortoise,the length of its plastron is 5.1 inches.
I need 2 knw whether any diseases can be transferrd frm human to tortoises or vice versa bcause i normally sleep wid my tortoise.
My star tortoise is very active while feeding but once he is done with it he runs for a dark corner 2 sleep.
It sleeps for around 12-16 hrs a day.
Is there ny problem with its health.
I give him variety of foods dat include,
1)coriander leaves
2)lettuce leaves
3)brocolli & brocolli leaves
4)cabbage
5)oranges,grapes(ocassionaly)
6)lady finger without seeds
7)grass
8)tomatoes
9)carrots,beet
10)rose petals,flowers,etc
It eats 3 times in a day.
I also sprinkle cuttle bone powder while feeding 2 times a week & it drinks water almost everyday.
We give it a bath almost everyday in luke warm water as it eats a lot.
Can any 1 tel me am i feeding right things to my tortoise.
Can any 1 suggest the name of a vitamin D3 supplement dat i can buy from a pet store.

This site does not buy or sell tortoises or turtles. The best way to get a healthy tortoise is to find a local reputable breeder or an animal rescue agency.

I suggest you check with a tortoise rescue agency in your area. They will know of people with experience in dealing with tortoises. And if you don't find someone to buy a tortoise, a rescue agency will give it a temporary home.

Friend just use UVB or UVA light that is 2 or 3 inch i compared all online shopping sites I found the Paytm app lowest price i.e 120rs for one mini 2inch UVB lamp.....I also wanted to adopt a star tortoise here pet keeper is saleing for 1500 to 2500 with depends on size......Thanks

You should check your local laws. I believe that in India it is illegal to own a star tortoise. That is because they are in danger of disappearing.

In North America, the star tortoises are from captive breeding.

thanks a lot. i have two star turtle, i had taken it 8 days back. so i m confused abt their food & bath and how to take care of them.i have kept them in a plastic big box. i own 3 red slider too, and kept them in a seprate box. pls help me how to take care of my little stars. it may sound funny but should i put them in water daily for their poo time. the eat tomatoes, ladyfinger and coriander. i can't find any calcium for them. thanks

Hi Tanya,
Please don't overfeed your tortoise as they can gain weight easily which might create a lot of health issues. During summer soak it in water as they cannot release their heat easily due to their shell. Give water almost everyday to drink. Take care.

Hi,

U can bathe ur tortoise 2 - 3 times a week. Star tortoise are prone to respitory problems.... so if kept for more time in damp place.... can cause cold to them.


Can u also suggest me any food for them which is High in Fibre and calcium.....
