My sulcata tortoise was left outside over night and is lost

by Jen
(Azusa, CA)

Now she is lost! We left her in an enclosed area in our veggie garden for the evening so she can catch a bit of sun. We forgot she was outside until the next morning. She wasn't in the enclosed area! Not sure how she got out but my main concern is I wonder if a bird or other predator got her. We spent all morning looking in our good size backyard which is enclosed by concrete walls and a wooden door. She is about a year old. I'm worried we may have lost her for good.

lost mine too! D:

I brought my 10 year old leopard tortoise outside yesterday with the kids to bask and graze. Normally he stays put, and the kids help me watch, but we got busy and when I looked, he was gone! He's the size of a soccer ball and normally he's like a bulldozer, we know instantly where he's gone just by the trail he leaves. But not this time :(
We have 10 acres of land, and he's done this once before, and my wonderful husband found him burrowed under a pine bough not even two feet in the tree line after searching for hours everywhere. But that was earlier in the spring. Now its warm and everything is grown over. We had to stop searching on account of darkness, and we're searching now hoping that he'll come out and bask in the morning sun. But I'm feeling very anxious and trying not to panic. So I understand how you feel, and I'm really glad you found your sulcata. Hopefully, we'll find Merlin again soon!

Great!

I'm so glad you found her! What I found to be helpful when my russian is walking around, I use masking tape and secure a semi blown up balloon or one of those small yard flags that you find at the hardware store. Just so you can keep an eye on her and it is easy to find her.

I found her! She was under some leaves next to our house. I was so relieved!!! Now I got to find another way she can stay outside without escaping !

Burrowed
by: Anonymous

About how big is she? Check around for any holes or soft dirt where she might have burrowed and got out. Contact local pet stores, pounds, and if you live close the zoo. Also if you have a neighborhood watch system then talk to them so they will keep an eye out. Put up bright colored posters with her picture and a short description about when she was lost, your phone number, and a description of her. I hope you find her soon.
