well when i first got my tortoise as a gift from a friend it hated me it would bite and wouldnt have anything to do with me so a neighbor with a tortoise told me to try singing to him.so i did and it worked.

Just be kind to him/her a nice stroke under the chin also don't just charge in with the hand be very slow.
