red foot care

I have 2 questions actually. I have raised water turtles for years but just got my first red footed tortoise this week. I want to get an approximate age for him because the pet store had no clue. His shell is approximately 4 1/2 inches. I am guessing he is between 1 and 2 yrs old but would like to get a better idea on that.

Q 2 is about diet. I have read a variety of sources on the matter and it seems there is little consistency from one to the next. Some say spinach and tomato are okay, others say not to feed it at all, some say sparingly to both. I have also read that bananas are okay but your site says no. I have read sources that say re-hydrated dry cat/dog food is okay and others say absolutely no grains and breads which are fillers for the dry foods. Another inconsistency is about the need for a basking light and D3.

I don't want to do anything potentially harmful to my new friend. It is clear that he has not been on a proper diet as his shell has evidence of some pyramiding. According to the employee that helped me with my purchase, he was consuming a diet of only pellets and carrots while at the pet store.
