Russian Tortoise breathing problem?

by Tyler Ratzlaff
(USA)

My Russian Tortious is breathing loudly out of his nose every couple seconds. Puffing air out, which he does not usually do. His whole body jolts every time he does this and bobs his head in and out.. is he okay?

Tortoises should not be breathing loud
by: Anonymous

My Herman tortoise is breathing loudly when he moves around, sounds like snuffles. I took him to the vet and the vet said he should not be breathing out his mouth, which he is, hence the noise. He is doing this as he has a slight cold and has been put on antibiotics. I mix the fluid antibiotice with banana and bit of honey to disguise the taste - he scoffs it down. His snuffles have made him lose his appetite a bit, so hopefully when the antibiotics kick in he will re-gain his appetite. If you are worried, take your tort to a Tortoise savvy vet.
