Sulcata Tortoise Closed eyes

I've had my sulcata tortoise for a couple months now, and he's been having eye issues.

The first time, he got over it- it was just a bit of dirt in his eye. I assumed it was the same thing this time also. He had opened his eyes a tiny slit a couple days ago, but know it's back. He doesn't eat because he can't see, and isnt active because of this. I'm really worried. Please help!!!
I've been soaking him every day, and putting eye drops. Nothing seems to be working..

So Glad
by: Shelly

I'm so glad your tortoise is doing well!

And thank you for coming back here to tell us what happened. This will encourage others to see a vet quickly to take care of eye problems.

Have a peaceful holiday with your tortoise.

Keep it slow and steady.

I took him to the vet today, and they knew exactly what to do! The gave him some oitment to soften his eyes, and gave him a couple of shots- Vitamin A, and an antibiotic with fluids. Hes sleeping now, but when he was up, his eyes where open. Im so glad i got him there when I did!

Thanks so much guys!!!

Eye Problems
by: Shelly

You are noticing one of the reasons that eye problems are so serious in tortoises. They need their eyes to help them get to their food.

Please do see a vet. The problem could be an infection or a lack of Vitamin A. A vet will know which it is and will know the dosage for your pet.

Let us know what happens.

Keep it slow and steady.

My Russian had the same problem, I took her to the vet and received antibiotics which helped her eyes to clear up quickly....
