Tortoise age

How can you tell the age of a Russian tortoise?

Hi Marc,

Some people say that you can tell the age of a tortoise by counting the rings on its scutes. But that doesn't work for lots of reasons. The only real way to know its age is to know the age of a tortoise is to know when it was born.

I recently rescued a horsefield tortoise. Was hoping Simone could give me an estimate of his age. His shell is 5 and a half inches just holding tape measure next to him and 7 inches from top to bottom of shell. Any ideas on age please?

You can tell the age by being there when the turtle hatches. Anything else is an estimate.
