Growing up in Africa, we cajoled our little cousin to put his index finger in the turtle's anus. He didn't lose the finger but the anus contracted around the finger. It wasn't easy to get out- and of course all the older kids got into big trouble. This was one exaggerated myth

Like Lanre said its an African Myth. I am in my late twenties and live in Ghana (West Africa). As a child, i went to a Zoo and the zookeeper told me this tale.
After over twenty years I just remembered this tale and decided to find out for myself not because I want to stick my finger(s) into any animals anus, but just fact checking if there was any truth to this ridiculous tale. I haven't seen a tortoise since that day(over 2 decades ago) and no way I would try that assuming it was true. After all, VANITY THY NAME IS WOMAN- i love my fingers.

The tortoise will not cut off your finger, but the animal could be badly injured. Like many folk myths, this one may have originated by adults trying to stop children from doing some damage by scaring them. I would rather teach respect for all living things than say things that are not true.
So no matter what the consequence to the human, I strongly suggest that no one put anything into any animal without medical necessity and without medical training.

you guys should not be disgusted at the post. In Africa(Nigeria), it is believed that if you stick your finger into the anus of a tortoise,it will cut your fingers off. Most of us are looking for answers to this myth. That what got me to this page in the first place.
So please, you guys should help with the question.
