Tortoise won't open his eyes and doesn't want to eat

by sue
(nottingham)

I have two horsefield tortoises, recently they don't seem to be eating anything and don't open their eyes. I have changed their lamp to a special reptile bulb. Previously we have had problems with the cat thinking their house is a litter tray. I always clean them out really quickly but wondered if this has had an affect on them. Should I take them to the vet?

Thanks

Sue

Any time you wonder if you should see a vet, the answer is, "Yes."

In this case, "Absolutely yes!" With the added problem of the cat litter, you need professional help. Infected eyes are very serious for tortoises and they almost never get well on their own.

Without proper vision, your pets cannot see what they are eating, and that's important for a tortoise. The infection can also spread to other parts of the body.

Please see your vet as soon as you can.

Keep it slow and steady.
