Turtle biting own foot

Hello,

We have a red earred slider about 7 months old who got a wound on its front foot. We just noticed him nipping at it and biting pieces off of it, why would it do this?

He probably thinks its own foot is food....don't know what to do about that though.

I would take this animal to a vet. It's not normal to bit off bits of your own body.
