what brand of top soil should i use for my horsefield tortoise

I dont want to get topsoil with fertilizers in it, or manure, but i couldnt find one that satisfied me at my local Lowes. I figured maybe i was being too picky? And can i just get some dirt out of my front yard and use it? I dont want to bake it, i want to simple dig it up and put it in his box.

Substrate
by: Shelly

A horsfield will be happiest outside. If you must keep it indoors, the substrate should not hold moisture. It should be several inches thick. A mix of topsoil and play sand will work. Cyprus mulch is also OK. Don't use pine or cedar because it can cause breathing problems. Timothy hay on top of the substrate will make your tortoise happy, too. He can burrow in it.

Keep it slow and steady.

substrate

I have a sulcata and I use coconut coir for his substrate, it's easy to keep clean. I change out mine completely every 6 months w/ poop pick up in between, holds humidity like a champ. It can be bought in brick form at any pet store, I also have it available on my site crittercareextraordinaire.com
