What is a healthy color for my Leopard Tortoise?

by Kathy Beeson

My Leopard Tortoise's legs seem to be getting darker. It is a small tortise, I'm not sure of the age and I have it in a calcium based "sand". He is actively eating the land Tortoise food that I purchased at the pet store but I am afraid that I am not giving him the nutrition he needs. He drinks a lot of water and is still very active, I'm just not sure that his coloring is right. I have an outdoor area for him (her?) in my front yard that I allow the grass to grow without cutting. He's active and seems happy, but I wonder about the darkening color on his legs and face.

Normally, a leopard tortoise's skin is yellow, tan, or cream colored.

I have no idea why it would be a different color. This would be a good question for a vet that speicializes in reptiles.
