A tortoise can live for some time out of a special environment, but it needs special temperatures, humidity and lighting, none of which are likely in your living room.
In addition, a tortoise will not be housebroken. Are you going to be able to clean up after a loose tortoise? Will young children be crawling around on the same surfaces?
