Why is my red eared slider turtle pacing?

by Amanda

Our turtle began pacing back and forth in her tank. She is slapping at the water and splashing water everywhere. She is a red-eared slider...We have had her for years and she just began doing this. What is wrong with her? Should we worry?

Pacing
by: MrsPerrin

I've had my two painted turtles for 17 years. Every GREAT once in a while one or the other will pace frantically; sometimes for days.
I've found this to be constipation. I don't feed them during this time, and for the most part, they usually don't even want to eat when this happens.
If your aquatic turtle responds to an evacuation bath, that's something you may want to try.
Once mine deficate, all behavior follows as well, including their appetite.
Of course none of this info can take the place of veterinary care if you find it necessary.

Any time your turtle changes behavior, it's good to pay attention. I'm not sure why yours is doing what it is. If eating, drinking, and sleeping change, do see a vet.
