why would a tortoise stay in the water dish alot?

by Angel
(Alaska)

I was wondering if it was safe for our tortoise to stay in the water soaking dish for hours a day? We recently made them a new habitat and even though the humidity guage says humidity is ok our tortoises have been spending hours layin in there water dish??? Are they just enjoying soaking or is something wrong with our setup that is making them need more moisture? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you

Tortoise And Water
by: Anonymous

Animals with choices will usually do what is good for them. In the wild, some tortoises will wallow in water for most of a day, then move to another area to forage for a few days, going without water at all, then return to the water for another good soak. It all depends on the type and size of your tortoise and the rest of its living conditions. If you are really concerned, it would be best to see a vet because the vet will look at the whole animal and its situation, not just focus on one behavior.
